Advanced Integrative Approach to Small Animal Neurology - 20 CE Hrs RACE Approved

True integration of conventional (Western) veterinary medicine and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) requires the ability to treat these two seemingly disparate conceptual entities as two interrelated and synergistic parts of an indivisible whole. From pathophysiology to treatment, conventional veterinary and TCVM principles are typically mutually translatable. This course covers key aspects of diagnosing and treating small animal neurologic disorders from this inclusive integrative standpoint. As such, this course provides a complete and clinically relevant overview of localizing lesions, generating differential diagnosis lists, creating targeted diagnostic plans and devising effective treatment protocols-all from the standpoint of combining conventional veterinary medicine and TCVM at each step. At the end of the course, the practitioner will feel confident in diagnosing and developing treatment strategies for the most common neurologic disorders encountered in small animal practice.

This class will be ideal for anyone who wishes to feel comfortable diagnosing and treating small animal neurology patients from both western and eastern standpoints. This course will both simplify small animal neurology and offer insights into integrative diagnosis and treatment. This course is RACE approval for 20 CE hours.

Course Objectives

Lesions of the nervous system lead to very predictable clinical patterns in dogs and cats. Since TCVM is very pattern-based, it is particularly well-suited to recognition and categorization of these neurologic disorders. Contrary to the more traditional method of learning all the parts of the whole (complex neuroanatomy) prior to learning crucial aspects of the whole (the neuroanatomic diagnosis), this course takes the opposite approach. By combining TCVM and conventional veterinary concepts (vs. treating TCVM as an “add on” to conventional veterinary medicine). 

The main objectives of this course are the following: 

  1. Ensure the participant is comfortable in arriving at the correct neuroanatomic and TCVM pattern diagnosis 
  2. Provide an understanding of integrative pathophysiologic mechanisms of various neurologic diseases 
  3. Explain diagnostic testing methods in integrative terms
  4. Provide the clinician with a variety of integrative treatment options for common small animal neurologic disorders.

Dr. Dewey is currently Associate Professor of Neurology/Neurosurgery, Cornell University. He is also President of Elemental Pet Vets, PLLC-a company that focuses on Integrative Veterinary Medicine and rehabilitation/exercise therapy. Dr. Dewey was a faculty neurologist at Texas A&M University (1995-2001) and a staff neurologist at Long Island Veterinary Specialists (2001-2006) prior to returning to his alma mater in 2006. He has authored/coauthored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and many textbook chapters. He recently published the third edition of his own comprehensive textbook, Practical Guide to Canine and Feline Neurology, with his co-editor, Dr. Ronaldo C da Costa. He is also co-author (neurosurgery section) of the newly released fifth edition of Dr. Theresa Fossum’s textbook, Small Animal Surgery. Most recently, he has published his own acupuncture textbook, Clinician’s Guide to Canine Acupuncture, with his co-editor Dr. Huisheng Xie. He is a nationally and internationally recognized speaker and has served on the editorial board of several veterinary journals (Veterinary Surgery, Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association, Compendium on Continuing Education for the Practicing Veterinarian, Frontiers in Veterinary Science-Neurology). He has also served as an ad hoc reviewer for a number of other journals. He has served on the ACVIM (Neurology) Residency Training Committee (2005-2008; committee chair 2007-2008) and the ACVIM Taskforce on Neurosurgical Training of Neurology Residents (2004-2010; committee chair 2007-2010). He consults regularly with Long Island Veterinary Specialists (LIVS) and Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Service (VSES) of Rochester. Dr. Dewey is a member of the AVMA, IVAS, AATCVM and IVAPM. His main areas of research include seizure control, surgical management of congenital brain and spinal disorders, and integrative therapies for neurologic disorders and pain control. In recent years, Dr. Dewey has developed an interest in geriatric medicine, particularly the role of TCVM in improving the lives of older pets. Dr. Dewey was the recipient of the 2014 Hills ACVECC Jack Mara Scientific Achievement Award. He was also a recipient of a Chi Institute CVM Scholarship Award in 2015.
